  • The students will read a short story, "Trapped by the Ice".   In this true story, Ernest Shackleton and his crew face many life and death situations once their ship, The Endurance, becomes trapped, and eventually sinks, in the icy waters of the Weddell Sea. The men must work together, amid all adversity, to survive and find a way off the ice and onto solid land.  Focus standard: Determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported by key details; summarize the text.

MONDAY - We will share Tombstone projects.
TUESDAY - FRIDAY -  Students will read the following non-fiction passages throughout the week:  "The Great Depression", "Inner Planets vs Outer Planets", "Causes of the Civil War", and "Animal Life Cycles".  Students will read the passage, put a star beside important details, underline new vocabulary words, draw a T chart labeled "Facts From Story and My Thoughts", write a main idea statement for each paragraph, answer questions about the text, and determine text structure and use evidence to support thinking.

VOCABULARY

Greek and Latin Roots Unit 3 - Words, definitions, and practice activities will be given out on Monday.  Test will be Friday.

SOCIAL STUDIES

We begin our unit on causes on the American Revolution.  Students will determine causes and events leading to the American Revolution, including the French and Indian War, the Stamp Act, the Intolerable Acts, the Boston Massacre, and the Boston Tea Party.

OCTOBER 24-28

Writing: 
Last week, I  passed out  information and due dates for the Notable American Biography/Tombstone project.  Each student  received information about a famous American.  They gathered facts from their information sheet and completed a planning sheet, created an acrostic poem, and wrote an obituary for their famous American based on their planning sheet.  We completed ALL of this last week IN CLASS.  This week, AT HOME, your child will create a tombstone with information about their Notable American.  The tombstone, all with ALL planning sheets, will be due Monday, October 31st.

Reading



Throughout the week, we will be reviewing non-fiction text features and text structures.  The students will be reading and annotating non-fiction text. The IXL skills VV.1 and VV.2 will be focusing on Context Clues and JJ.1 will be focusing on Usage Errors. These are skills we will use throughout the week in our non-fiction reading text.  IXL skills are due Friday!



Vocabulary
 We are introducing and reviewing words used in non-fiction texts.  We will create a flip booklet in our Reading Journal. There will NOT be a test on Friday. 



Social Studies
We are finishing up our study of the 13colonies.    A study guide was distributed last Wednesday, Oct. 19 and a test will be this week on Thursday, Oct. 27




WHAT'S HAPPENING THIS WEEK
OCTOBER 17-21

Writing: 
Today, I will pass out a project we will be working on throughout the week.  Each student will receive information about a famous historical American.  They will gather facts from their information sheet and complete a planning sheet.  The planning sheet is due Wednesday.  By Friday, they will write an obituary for their famous American based on their planning sheet.  At home, your child will create a tombstone with information about their American.  The tombstone will be due Monday, October 31st.


Throughout the week, we will be reviewing non-fiction text features and text structures to prepare for the following week.  The IXL skills will be about main idea and sequencing, which are skills we will use throughout the week.


Vocabulary
These words will come home on Monday.  We are introducing and reviewing words used in non-fiction texts.  There will be a test on Friday. 



Social Studies
We are continuing our study of the colonies.  We finished our discussion of New England colonies and will learn about the Middle and Southern colonies this week.  Study guides will be distributed this week and a test will be the following week.
